Professor Maria Fredriksson-Ahomaa is affiliated with the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Food Hygiene and Environmental Health. She leads research in food safety, zoonotic pathogens, and antimicrobial resistance in animal production systems. Her work integrates One Health principles, focusing on pathogens such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, Yersinia, and Escherichia species.
Her research emphasizes foodborne pathogens in meat production chains (pigs, poultry, wild game), antimicrobial resistance dynamics, and meat inspection methodologies. Notable areas include wild boar and hedgehog reservoirs of zoonoses, companion animal Yersinia carriage, and Campylobacter in game birds. She collaborates with the Helsinki One Health Research organization and has published extensively on EU surveillance programs, bacterial contamination in meat processing, and genomic analysis of pathogens.
Publications highlight challenges in pathogen detection (e.g., Yersinia species misidentification), hygiene practices in slaughterhouses, and traceability in cheese production. Her work bridges veterinary science, food safety, and public health policy, addressing emerging threats in both domestic and wild animal populations.
