Martin John Smith serves as Anniversary Professor and Head of Department of Politics at the University of York's Faculty of Social Sciences. He also holds significant administrative roles including PVC for International Development and Special Adviser within the Vice Chancellor's Office. Previously, he was Professor of Politics and Head of Department at the University of Sheffield (2001-2005), and Faculty Director of Research there (2008-2012).
Professor Smith's research focuses on Public Policy, British Politics, and State Theory, with particular expertise in Administrative Reform and Welfare Policy. His work examines power dynamics within the UK state, constitutional politics, and the functioning of central government institutions. He has consistently investigated how political elites interact with constitutional frameworks and how treasury control mechanisms impact governance effectiveness.
