Robert Smith is a Lecturer in International Relations at Coventry University, affiliated with the Department of International Studies and Social Sciences within the School of Humanities (Faculty of Arts and Humanities). He holds a PhD in International Relations (Lancaster University, 2008), an MA in Politics and International Relations (2003), a BSc in Computer Science (1988), and a PGCert in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (2006).
His research focuses on contemporary Iraqi politics, statebuilding, counterinsurgency strategies, and British foreign policy. Key areas include the Kurdistan Regional Government, post-conflict reconstruction, and the political dynamics of unrecognized states like Somaliland and Kurdistan. He co-authored a textbook on British Foreign Policy since 1945 and has published extensively on topics such as constitutional settlements in Iraq, non-recognition politics, and local governance reforms post-2003.
Smith has taught at Lancaster University and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. His professional experience includes working with the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (2003-2004) and serving as a political/security analyst in Erbil, Kurdistan. He teaches courses on foreign policy analysis and post-1945 world politics.
His articles analyze statebuilding challenges, the 'War on Terror,' and the interplay between international recognition and political legitimacy. He critiques externally driven statebuilding models and advocates for understanding local agency in post-conflict contexts.
