Dr. Johan Franzen is an Associate Professor in Middle East History at the School of History and Art History, University of East Anglia. His research focuses on the political history of the modern Middle East, particularly the Arab East (al-Mashreq), exploring themes such as nation-building, resistance to Western imperialism, and the formation of national identities post-World War I. He specializes in Iraqi history, British imperial influence, and political movements like Arab Communism and Ba’athism.
Key research interests include Ottoman statecraft, British imperial projects, American foreign policy influence, and local Arab resistance movements. His work emphasizes intellectual history, national identities, and the interplay between domination and resistance. Franzen has authored seminal works such as Red Star Over Iraq (2011) and Pride and Power: A Modern History of Iraq (2020), which analyze Iraqi communism and the trajectory of modern Iraqi statehood.
Teaching spans the political history of the Middle East from the 19th century to the present, covering topics like nationalism, Islamism, and identity politics. He is actively accepting PhD students and holds a strong academic presence with a h-index of 21 and 386 citations (Scopus).
