Dr. Yaniv Voller is a Senior Lecturer in Middle East Politics and Director of Graduate Studies (Taught) at the University of Kent’s School of Politics and International Relations. He holds a PhD in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and previously served as a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. His research focuses on the international and comparative politics of the Middle East and North Africa, with recent work extending to the Horn of Africa. Key themes include contested sovereignty, separatist violence, diaspora politics, civil wars, and the evolving role of armed forces.
Dr. Voller’s academic contributions include the book Second-Generation Liberation Wars: Rethinking Colonialism in Iraqi Kurdistan and Southern Sudan (Cambridge University Press, 2022) and The Kurdish Liberation Movement in Iraq: From Insurgency to Statehood (Routledge, 2014). He has published widely in journals such as International Affairs, Terrorism and Political Violence, and Democratization. His 2023 Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation award supports research on pro-government militias’ impact on political/social order in conflict regions. He also led an LSE-funded project on diaspora returnees’ roles in civil society activism in Iraqi Kurdistan, Somaliland, and South Sudan.
In teaching, Dr. Voller instructs undergraduate courses on Middle East Politics (POLI6300) and postgraduate modules on Middle Eastern Politics and Society (POLI8109). He supervises PhD students exploring Middle East politics, separatism, and liberation movements. His work frequently informs media commentary via BBC, Al Jazeera, and other platforms.
