Professor Martin Smith is the Anniversary Professor of Politics at the University of York's Department of Politics and International Relations. He previously held leadership roles at the University of Sheffield, including Head of Department and Faculty Director of Research. His research focuses on British Politics, Public Policy, and State Transformation, with over 14 books and 100+ articles. He has led projects funded by ESRC, EU, and others, including studies on the British Core Executive and Policy Implementation.
Education: PhD in Politics from the University of Essex (1988). Notable roles include editor of the Political Studies journal (2008–2011) and ESRC Evaluation Committee member. Awards include Academy of Social Sciences membership (2010).
Research emphasizes central government reform, policy networks, and state theory. Current projects explore the Crisis of British Politics and Labour’s Political Economy. He has supervised numerous students on topics like security privatization and climate change policy.
Teaching includes British Politics, Public Policy, and Political Economy. External engagements include advising the Audit Commission, Electoral Commission, and EU. Recent activities include media commentary on UK politics and parliamentary evidence submissions.
