Martin Smith is a Visiting Professor at the Institute for Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship (ICCE) at Goldsmiths, University of London. He works extensively in the media, cultural and creative sectors in various advisory, executive, and non-executive capacities. He serves as a special adviser to the Ingenious group, an investment firm that has deployed over £8 billion in the UK's creative economy. Additionally, he is a member of the Creative Industries Advisory Group (CIAG), a UKRI/AHRC body advising on the government's £150 million creative industries 'sector deal'.
Martin Smith holds a PhD in History from Cambridge University (1977) and a BA in History from Cambridge University (1973).
Smith's research focuses on the intersection of culture, media, and commerce, with particular expertise in cultural and creative industries policy, film business economics, and the political economy of the creative sector. His work examines how creative industries function as economic entities while maintaining cultural value, with special attention to investment patterns, public policy frameworks, and the evolving business models in film and media production. He has contributed significantly to understanding the 'creative industries' concept two decades after its adoption by the UK government, analyzing its implications for industrial strategy and economic development.
Smith has made numerous submissions to UK Parliamentary Committees on matters related to the cultural and creative industries, including inquiries on British film and high-end television, UK engagement in Central Asia, and the future of the creative sector. His publications address critical issues facing independent film sectors, creative industry classifications, and sector-specific challenges in both developed and developing economies.

Martin Smith has extensive advisory experience across multiple creative sector organizations. He has served as chair of trustees for the Young Vic Theatre Company, music venue St John's Smith Square (Westminster), and the London Festival of Baroque Music. He is an active member of the British Screen Forum and has advised organizations including the National Film & Television School (NFTS), the Judge Business School at Cambridge University, MeWe30 (a BAME-oriented business incubator), the British Council, and the Young Vic Theatre Company. His consulting work spans trade associations, development agencies, national governments, management consultancies, and private businesses, focusing on policy analysis, investor research, public advocacy, and communications within the creative economy.
