Dr Martin James is a Lecturer in Management at the Department of Management, Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham. He serves as Director of the BSc Business Management Suite of programmes and leads key modules such as Organisational Behaviour & HRM in the Executive MBA programme. He is a member of the Organisation, Work and Employment (OWE) research group and teaches across undergraduate, postgraduate, and international programmes, including in Singapore.

Dr James’ research focuses on organisational behaviour, human resource management, and the sociology of work, with a theoretical grounding in critical realism and dramaturgical analysis. His work explores front-line service work, industrial relations in late capitalism, and the future of work. He has conducted empirical studies in both private and public sectors, including blue-chip organisations. His teaching interests include international HRM, managing diversity, and organisational leadership.
His recent publication addresses inclusion and free speech for international students, reflecting broader trends in his research on equity and workplace dynamics. His work has been presented at international conferences in London, New York, Buenos Aires, and Rio de Janeiro, and he has contributed to national media such as BBC News and Business News Wales.

Dr James has supervised numerous MSc dissertations with a 100% completion rate. He previously taught at the universities of Warwick, Leicester, and Swansea. He also designed and delivered the evaluation framework for the Welsh Government’s Vibrant & Viable Places regeneration policy in collaboration with KAS and ESRC. His corporate experience in HR and FMCG sectors informs his teaching practice.
He is actively involved in programme leadership and educational innovation at Birmingham Business School, having served in roles such as Deputy Director of the HRM MSc programme and Management Department Education Lead before becoming Director of the BSc Business Management Suite in July 2023.
