Dr Martin Brock serves as Associate Head (Students) at the University of Portsmouth's Portsmouth Business School, where he is affiliated with the Organisation Studies and Human Resource Management department. He holds a BA (Hons) from the University of Sussex, an MSc (Distinction) in Human Resource Management and Employment Relations from Warwick Business School, and a PhD in Business and Management (passed with no corrections). His doctoral research examined the impact of the apprenticeship levy on employers, with interviews spanning over 100 levy-paying organizations. A former Senior Teaching Fellow and Course Leader for Undergraduate HRM Programmes at Warwick Business School, he earned multiple teaching awards and ESRC-funded support.
Entrepreneurially, Brock founded and led a successful adult English language school (2001–2015), achieving British Council accreditation, Independent Schools Inspectorate recognition (noting it 'exceeded expectations'), and Tier 4 visa sponsorship status. The school taught 3,000+ students from 90+ countries under his leadership. His pre-academic career included charity work in Bolivia, London homelessness support, and L'Arche community service with individuals with disabilities.
As an academic, his research focuses on HRM policy implementation, small business training strategies, and the intersection of education and social equity. His teaching expertise spans undergraduate and postgraduate HRM curricula, emphasizing practical application and student-centered learning. Beyond academia, his entrepreneurial ventures demonstrate commitment to affordable, high-quality education and social mission-driven initiatives.
