Prof. Martin Grininger is a Lichtenberg Professor at Goethe University Frankfurt, leading a research group focused on enzymology and structural biology. Previously, he was a project leader at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry. His primary affiliations are with the Department of Chemistry at Goethe University, where he conducts cutting-edge research on fatty acid synthases (FAS), polyketide synthases (PKS), and protein engineering.
His research interests encompass the structural and functional analysis of megasynthases, particularly FAS and PKS systems, with applications in biotechnology. Key areas include substrate shuttling mechanisms, enzyme kinetics, and the engineering of enzymes for directed polyketide production. Grininger's work integrates cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM), biochemical assays, and synthetic biology to design novel biosynthetic pathways.
Recent studies highlight advancements in understanding FAS/PKS structure-function relationships and their application in producing industrially relevant compounds like short-chain fatty acids and fluorinated polyketides. His group also explores dodecin proteins for bioengineering applications, including flavin storage and material science.
