Martin Eugene Callanan is an Associate Professor of Archaeology at the Department of Historical and Classical Studies, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), within the Faculty of Humanities. His research focuses on Glacial Archaeology, Mountain Archaeology, Prehistoric Archery Technologies, and Sami Archaeology. He actively integrates digital tools like drones and low-cost VR into education, leading projects such as the VR-Learn pilot and the InternAbroad exchange network.
He holds memberships in the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters and the UISPP’s HOME Commission, contributing to mountain archaeology initiatives. His pedagogical leadership includes coordinating BA and MA thesis courses and field schools. Callanan’s work bridges archaeological research with modern educational technology, emphasizing student-active learning and heritage preservation in the face of climate change.
His projects like SPARC investigate climate impacts on alpine heritage, while EMERGE reports explore emerging educational technologies. He collaborates with international institutions, promoting cross-cultural archaeological studies through internships with Canadian and US partners. His research groups include the Environmental Archaeology Research Group and Middelaldersenteret.
