He has a particular interest in the sensory dimensions of warfare, especially soundscapes, and has led projects such as the DFG Network 'Sound Spheres of the Middle Ages' and the DFG project 'Belliphonie'. His work also critically examines the portrayal of the Middle Ages in schoolbooks across Germany and Europe.
