Christoph Pretzer's research centers on medieval cultural history, particularly narratives of loss, urban destruction, and historical memory. His work explores how medieval authors processed catastrophes such as the fall of Acre (1291), using literary and theological frameworks to interpret defeat. Key themes include lamentation literature, vernacular historiography, the Kaiserchronik, crusader ideologies, and biblical reception. He investigates how historical distance, spolia, and moral typology (e.g., Sodom and Acre) shaped medieval understandings of empire and divine justice.
His recent publications reveal a consistent focus on textual responses to historical trauma, especially in German-language chronicles and poetic histories. He frequently analyzes narrative strategies, authorial voice, and symbolic representation in shaping collective memory. His forthcoming monographs with De Gruyter and Routledge will further solidify his contributions to medieval catastrophe studies and crusade literature.
Scientific Awards:
- Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Research Fellowship
Dr. Pretzer has advised on research projects and contributed to editorial and translation work, including critical editions of early modern theological texts. He has not supervised formal PhD or Master’s students as per available records. He is involved in collaborative research networks such as the DFG Network 'Sound Spheres of the Middle Ages' and the DFG project 'Belliphonie' at TU Chemnitz. His current research continues to examine medieval discourses of loss and resilience, particularly in the context of urban and imperial decline.
He is an active contributor to academic discourse through peer-reviewed publications, conference proceedings, and scholarly reviews, maintaining a strong presence in German philology and medieval historical studies.
