Laurence W. Marvin is a Professor of History at Berry College since 1998. He specializes in the European Middle Ages, particularly the long twelfth century (AD 1095–1225), the crusades, and military history. His teaching includes world history surveys, Roman history, medieval studies, and military history courses. He has authored notable works such as The Damietta Crusade (2024, Oxford University Press) and The Occitan War (2008, Cambridge University Press, later translated into Polish). In 2010, he received Berry College’s prestigious Mary S. and Samuel Poe Carden award for excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.
His research explores medieval warfare, crusade narratives, and political dynamics of the medieval period. He has contributed to scholarly discourse through co-edited volumes, encyclopedia entries, and articles on medieval military strategies and regional conflicts. His courses integrate primary sources and historiography, emphasizing critical analysis of historical contexts.
