Martha Field is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University’s College of Human Ecology. She investigates gene-nutrient interactions, focusing on how folate, vitamin B12, and erythritol metabolism impact mitochondrial function, chronic diseases, and cardiometabolic health.
- PhD in Biochemistry, Cornell University (2007)
- B.S. in Chemistry, Butler University (2000)
Her research spans two major areas:
- Mechanisms of impaired folate-dependent one-carbon metabolism in mitochondrial DNA integrity and age-related decline.
- Erythritol synthesis as a predictive biomarker for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
Her lab employs in vitro and in vivo models to explore:
- Enzymatic regulation of mitochondrial DNA precursor synthesis
- Genetic-epigenetic interactions in metabolic disease development
Selected Scientific Honors:
- Dean's Fellowship in the History of Home Economics
Current advisees include doctoral candidates studying:
- Katarina Heyden (B-12/folate metabolism)
- Semira Ortiz (erythritol metabolism)
- Kendra Tiani and Yuwen Xiu (molecular nutrition)
The Field Laboratory at Cornell uses interdisciplinary approaches to develop disease prevention strategies, with recent work published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry characterizing glucose-to-erythritol pathways.
