Martha Alonzo-Johnsen

Martha Alonzo-Johnsen is a Teaching Professor of Biology at the Dougherty Family College, University of St. Thomas. She holds a PhD in Biology from Duke University and a BA in Biology from the University of Chicago. Her teaching philosophy focuses on making fundamental biology accessible through enthusiastic instruction, encouraging diverse problem-solving approaches, and creating supportive learning environments where mistakes are part of the educational process.

Her research spans Developmental Biology—particularly heart development—alongside Anatomy and Physiology. She maintains strong interest in community-focused medical research that ensures scientific advances equitably represent diverse populations.
