Martha A. Case is an Associate Professor of Biology at the College of William & Mary, where she also serves as the College Conservator of Botanical Collections and Director of the William & Mary Herbarium. Her work integrates research, education, and conservation, with a focus on plant diversity and public engagement with botany.
Her research interests lie at the intersection of plant biodiversity, conservation science, and botanical education. She actively promotes the preservation and utilization of plant collections for teaching and research. As Conservator, she leads initiatives such as the development of the William & Mary Arboretum and collaborative ecological monitoring projects with Indigenous communities in Milpa Alta, Mexico. Her mission emphasizes training future botanists and increasing public appreciation for plants.
The William & Mary Herbarium, under her direction, houses 83,000 curated specimens and provides critical support for botanical research both locally and globally through digitized data and expert curation. She integrates her research into her teaching, ensuring students gain practical skills in field botany and conservation.
Dr. Case chairs committees that award student research grants in plant conservation and field botany, demonstrating her strong commitment to mentoring the next generation of scientists. She also plays a leadership role in institutional efforts to understand and remediate historical losses in campus plant biodiversity.
