Prof. Dieter Podlech (1931–2021) was a renowned German botanist and full professor of systematic botany at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. He held positions in the Faculty of Biology and the Institute of Systematic Botany and Mycology, retiring in 1996 but continuing active research. His work focused on plant systematics, particularly Cyperaceae, Carex, Astragalus, and the flora of Afghanistan, Iran, and Central Europe.
Education: Studied pharmaceutical botany at the University of Bonn (PhD 1958, habilitation 1965). Career highlights include curator roles at the Botanical State Collection in Munich (1965–1967) and founding the University Herbarium of LMU in 1991 with his 200,000-specimen collection. Fieldwork included extensive expeditions to Afghanistan (44 months across 28 provinces).
