Marta Gomez-Chiarri is a Professor in Aquaculture/Fisheries at the University of Rhode Island (URI). She currently serves as Director of the Biological and Environmental Sciences graduate program (2022–present) and previously held roles as Chair of the Department of Fisheries, Animal, and Veterinary Sciences (2014–2020) and Graduate Coordinator for Aquaculture and Sustainable Agriculture programs (until 2014). She is affiliated with the Eastern Oyster Genome consortium and the East Coast Shellfish Breeding Consortium, leading efforts in genomic sequencing and sustainable aquaculture.
Her research focuses on multidisciplinary approaches to disease prevention in marine organisms, including probiotics, genomics, and comparative immunology. Key projects include managing vibriosis in bivalves, genomic analysis of oyster populations, and mitigating impacts of microplastics and coastal stressors. She coordinates NOAA and USDA-funded initiatives, such as the Partnership for Research Excellence in Sustainable Seafood and the Bivalve Hatchery Health Consortium.
Education: PhD (1992) and B.S. (1988) in Biology from Universidad Complutense Madrid, Spain. Professional memberships include the National Academies’ Antimicrobial Resistance project (2020–2021). Her work emphasizes equitable access to sustainably produced seafood and integrates genetic tools with environmental challenges.
Research outputs highlight advancements in oyster microbiome modulation, probiotic efficacy, and genomic resources for aquaculture. Her grants and collaborations reflect a commitment to both fundamental science and applied solutions for fisheries and aquaculture industries.
