Michael A. Rice

Michael A. Rice is a Professor and Chair in Aquaculture/Fisheries at the University of Rhode Island (URI), appointed since 1987. He holds academic leadership roles, including former Chairman of the Department of Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Science (2000–2004) and President of the URI Faculty Senate (2005–2007 and 2022–2023). His research focuses on environmental physiology of bivalve molluscs, aquaculture sustainability, and invasive species management. He has conducted influential studies on nitrogen cycling in marine ecosystems and shellfishery resource management globally, including in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Zambia.

Education: Ph.D. in Comparative Physiology (University of California, Irvine, 1987), M.S. in Biological Sciences (UC Irvine, 1981), and B.S. in Biology (University of San Francisco, 1977). He completed Peace Corps service in the Philippines (1981–1985) and received three Fulbright Scholarships (Philippines 1996–97, Indonesia 1997, Philippines 2006).

Research interests span bivalve ecology, aquaculture system optimization, and environmental impacts of shellfish farming. His work emphasizes integrating aquaculture with coastal resource management and advancing sustainable practices. He has contributed to policy initiatives, including Rhode Island’s recreational saltwater fishing license program, and served as a legislator in the Rhode Island House of Representatives (2009–2011).
