Marta Giralt Oms

Marta Giralt Oms is a Full Professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biomedicine, University of Barcelona. She serves as Department Director and holds key administrative roles including Secretary of the Board of Doctors and member of the University Consultative Council. Her research focuses on HIV-associated metabolic disorders, obesity pathophysiology, and adipose tissue biology with particular emphasis on brown adipose tissue's endocrine functions and the effects of antiretroviral drugs.

Education: Biology degree (1986), PhD in Biological Sciences (1989, University of Barcelona), followed by postdoctoral training at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine (USA, 1990-1991). Active in teaching at undergraduate and master's levels, coordinating courses in metabolism and cellular engineering.

Research interests include molecular and cellular bases of adipose plasticity, FGF21 signaling pathways, and metabolic complications in HIV patients. Lead PI on EU-funded projects studying molecular mediators in HIV-associated atherosclerosis, adipose tissue browning, and bone-metabolic dysfunctions. Involved in translational research bridging basic science to clinical applications in obesity and HIV management.

Professional affiliations include CIBER Obesity and Nutrition (CIBEROBN), Institute of Biomedicine of the University of Barcelona (IBUB), and Sant Joan de Déu Research Institute. Served as Deputy Dean for Research (2008-2012) and evaluator for biomedical research funding agencies.
