Marsha Gordon is a Professor of Film Studies at North Carolina State University, affiliated with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in English/Film Studies from the University of Maryland (2001). Her research focuses on documentary film, Hollywood studio systems, independent filmmakers like Ida Lupino and Sam Fuller, and intersections of film with literature and other art forms. She has directed short documentaries, including Rendered Small and All the Possibilities..., and co-edited journals like The Moving Image. Her work bridges film history, gender studies, and cultural analysis.
Her awards include a National Humanities Center Fellowship (2019–2020), NEH Public Scholar (2020–2021), and a Bogliasco Foundation Fellowship (2024). She has explored topics such as Ursula Parrott’s forgotten contributions to literature and women’s history, highlighting underrepresented voices in cultural narratives. Her recent publications include Becoming the Ex-Wife (2023) and the 5th edition of Film, Form, and Culture (2024).
Prof. Gordon’s interdisciplinary teaching spans film genres, war documentaries, and feminist cinema. She co-founded Home Movie Day Raleigh and contributed to the monthly radio show Movies on the Radio. Her films and writings emphasize marginalized histories and the cultural significance of overlooked art forms.
