Katie Bird is an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at El Paso (College of Liberal Arts, Department of Communication). Her work bridges film and media studies with digital media production, focusing on Hollywood’s technical crafts, production cultures, and gendered labor histories.

Dr. Bird’s historical and ethnographic work examines how Hollywood technical workers (e.g., Steadicam operators) transformed manual labor into artistic craft, shaping industry standards. Her current book manuscript, Embodied Hollywood: How Workers Made Their Labor Matter to the Movies, 1919-1985, analyzes the role of bodily labor in film style. Her next project investigates U.S. women camera operators (1970s-1990s) and their professional organizations.
