Marni Boppart is a tenured Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with joint appointments in the College of Applied Health Sciences, Kinesiology and Community Health Department, and Biomedical and Translational Sciences Division. As an Associate Head for Faculty Affairs and Dean's Fellow, she leads academic and administrative initiatives.
Her research program develops cell- and pharmacological-based therapies targeting skeletal muscle growth post-exercise, focusing on stem cell, pericyte, and extracellular vesicle (EV) interventions for muscle recovery in aging populations. Recent work explores 27-hydroxycholesterol effects on EV secretion and integrin signaling in muscle repair.
Her publications span EV-based therapies, exercise-induced neurogenesis, muscle hypertrophy mechanisms, and food matrix effects on myofibrillar protein synthesis. She collaborates across bioengineering, physiology, and oncology disciplines.
- Allen Distinguished Investigator Award (2023)
- Fellow of the American Physiological Society (2021)
- Presidential Early Career Award (PECASE) (2025)
She has mentored numerous PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, with her lab actively contributing to muscle biology and EV research. Current projects include EV proteomics, pericyte therapy optimization, and exercise-brain-muscle crosstalk studies.
