Marlys L. Koschinsky, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Physiology & Pharmacology at Western University's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, where she conducts groundbreaking research at the Robarts Research Institute in London, Ontario. Her academic journey began with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Biology from the University of Winnipeg (1982), followed by a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics of Human Ceruloplasmin from the University of British Columbia (1988), and postdoctoral training at Genentech Inc. (1988-1991).
Dr. Koschinsky's research program focuses primarily on Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], a genetically determined causal risk factor for coronary heart disease. Her laboratory investigates multiple aspects of Lp(a) biology, including its catabolism, assembly, and the role of oxidized phospholipid modification in cardiovascular disease pathogenesis. Her work has demonstrated that the LDL receptor pathway plays a role in Lp(a) clearance, supporting clinical observations that PCSK9 inhibitors can reduce Lp(a) concentrations by 20-30%.
Analysis of Dr. Koschinsky's publication record reveals a consistent focus on Lp(a) as a critical cardiovascular risk factor, with recent work expanding into therapeutic targeting, genetic determinants, and clinical implications. Her publications span basic molecular mechanisms to clinical guidelines, reflecting her dual expertise in laboratory science and translational medicine. She has been instrumental in developing scientific statements for major organizations including the American Heart Association and National Lipid Association.
Scientific Recognition:
- Queen's University Chancellor's Research Award (1999)
- Premier's Research Excellence Award (1999)
- Career Investigator of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (2001-2011)
- Tony Graham Award for Excellence in Board Service – Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (2012)
As a dedicated researcher and mentor, Dr. Koschinsky has contributed significantly to cardiovascular science through her laboratory work, collaborative research, and participation in major scientific statements that guide clinical practice. Her research program at the Robarts Research Institute continues to investigate novel approaches to mitigate the cardiovascular risk associated with elevated Lp(a) levels.
