Marlies Honingh serves as Professor of Society Oriented Public Administration with a focus on enacting democracy at Utrecht University School of Governance and as Senior Research Fellow at the Netherlands School of Public Administration (NSOB) in The Hague. Previously, she held academic positions at Radboud University within the Department of Public Administration.

Her research critically examines democratic governance through lenses of citizenship, public participation, and co-production, with specialized focus on democratic erosion and institutional dynamics in public spaces. She integrates quantitative and qualitative methodologies within interdisciplinary frameworks, particularly analyzing governance structures in education sectors and mechanisms for sustaining democratic resilience against erosion trends.
Honingh co-founded the interdisciplinary 'Sustainable Democracy' research hub at Radboud University with Carolien van Ham. She currently chairs the Dutch Association for Public Administration (since 2023), the Evaluation and Monitoring Committee of VTOI-NVTK, and a program council committee of the Netherlands Initiative for Education Research (NRO), while also serving on the VO-council's Science Chamber and co-chairing the European Group of Public Administration's citizen participation study group.
