Dr. Marlies Hesselman is an Associate Professor at the Department of Transboundary Legal Studies, Faculty of Law, University of Groningen, and chairs the Groningen Centre for Health Law (since 2023). She holds dual affiliations with the interdisciplinary Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health and co-founded the Working Group on Human Rights & Climate Crisis at the Netherlands Network of Human Rights Research.
Her research focuses on intersections of socio-economic rights, climate change, and health law, emphasizing transnational energy justice and health-centric climate litigation. She leads projects funded by the EU CERV, NWO Sectorplan REPP, and Stanford University Children's Hospital, and contributes to global networks like the Columbia University Sabin Center's Climate Litigation Peer Group.
Hesselman's publications in The Lancet and BMJ analyze health arguments in climate law, with recent work examining the International Court of Justice's advisory role in climate-health governance. She advises organizations including WHO and UN OHCHR on rights-based energy transitions.
