Marla R. Goins

Marla R. Goins is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Her research focuses on transnational Black education, Afro-Latina/o education, Black feminism in the Global South, and culturally sustaining pedagogy. She employs qualitative methodologies to explore how marginalized Black communities develop resistant epistemologies and pedagogies in and outside schools. Her work also addresses strategies to increase and sustain Black graduate students and teachers globally.

Dr. Goins holds a Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning and Multicultural and Equity Studies in Education from The Ohio State University. Her scholarship spans topics such as Afro-Brazilian teacher activism, counter-literacies in natural hair communities, Afro-Latino identity in the Dominican Republic, and systemic racism in U.S. education systems.
