Markus Schermer

Markus Schermer is a full Professor and Deputy Head of the Institute of Sociology at the University of Innsbruck, where he has been employed since 1999. He also serves as Study Coordinator and leads the Mountain Agriculture Research Center, reflecting his dual expertise in sociology and agricultural systems.

Educational background:

• Studied agricultural economics at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna (BOKU)

Research Interests:
Schermer's work centers on agricultural sociology as a lens for understanding social phenomena, with emphasis on food production systems and mountain agriculture. His fieldwork spans Tyrolean communities, Bhutanese highlands, and African regions (Zambia/Ethiopia), examining how rural economies interact with cultural and environmental contexts. He particularly investigates sustainable food systems and the socioeconomic dimensions of mountain agriculture, connecting local practices to global development challenges through participatory approaches.

Professional Activities:
In 2019, Schermer led student excursions to Zambia, integrating field experience into academic training. His career includes establishing direct agricultural marketing channels with the Tyrol Chamber of Agriculture and supporting regional development offices in Tyrol.

Personal:
A resident of Lans near Innsbruck, he commutes 500 meters uphill by e-bike daily and engages in traditional Tyrolean outdoor activities including cross-country skiing, ski touring, and hiking. His office decor features global souvenirs from Bhutan, Africa, and Tyrol, reflecting his international fieldwork.
