Christian Fischer is a Full Professor in Agri-Food Economics at the Faculty of Agricultural, Environmental and Food Sciences, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (unibz), Italy. He also serves as Vice Dean for Education since 2023 and has directed the Bachelor’s program in Agricultural, Food and Mountain Environmental Sciences since 2014. He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Horticulturae (Section: Horticultural Economics, Policy, Business Management, and Marketing) and Co-President of the South Tyrolean Food Council.

His research focuses on agricultural and food supply/value chains, sustainable food systems, food policy, resource economics, rural development, and agri-tourism. He has led EU-funded projects, including FP6, and consulted for international organizations such as OSCE. His work emphasizes empirical studies in Alpine regions, local food networks, climate resilience, and consumer behavior.
The recent publications (2022–2025) reflect a strong trend toward sustainability in food systems, with subfields including agritourism, alternative grain networks, post-harvest loss reduction, and virtual water flows. His research bridges academic rigor with policy relevance, often involving case studies from South Tyrol, Italy, and international comparisons.
