Dr. Markus Bös is a Research Associate and Program Manager at the Institute of Geosciences and Geography, specifically in the Department of Human Geography, at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg since 2013. His work focuses on human geography with specializations in economic, urban, and social geography. He serves as an academic advisor for the M.Sc. International Area Studies - Global Change Geography program with a focus on Human Geography.
His educational background includes:
- 2010: Doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) in Geography from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz with a thesis titled "Deported to Marginality – An Empirical Study on the Problematic Integration of Turkish Citizens Deported from Germany for Criminal Offenses into Turkish Society."
- Prior to his doctorate, he completed his Diplom (comparable to a Master's degree) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, with his 2006 thesis on "Antalya's Old Town - Transformation through (Mass) Tourism."
Dr. Bös' research interests span across several key areas of human geography. His primary focus lies in general economic geography, examining how economic processes shape and are shaped by spatial arrangements. He also conducts significant work in urban geography, particularly studying geographical urban research with attention to transformation processes in cities, including those in East Germany following reunification. His social geography research often intersects with migration studies, especially concerning Turkish communities in Germany and their experiences with deportation and reintegration. His country expertise centers on Germany, Türkiye, the Middle East, and Arab states, providing a strong regional foundation for his comparative studies.
His recent publications demonstrate a clear trend toward regional studies with a focus on Saxony-Anhalt and Eastern Germany, while maintaining his longstanding interest in migration patterns and Turkish-German relations. The articles show progression from more theoretical work on migration drivers to applied regional studies examining specific communities and urban transformations. His research methodology appears to blend qualitative and quantitative approaches, with particular attention to empirical field studies. The geographical scope of his work has expanded from focused studies on Antalya, Turkey to broader examinations of German regions while maintaining transnational connections.
Dr. Bös has been actively involved in academic advising, serving as the academic advisor for the M.Sc. International Area Studies - Global Change Geography program. His research has been supported through his position at MLU Halle-Wittenberg, where he has conducted studies on the regional economic impact of the university itself, suggesting involvement in research grants related to higher education economics and regional development. His work with the European Center of Just Transition Research and Impact-Driven Transfer (JTC) indicates participation in larger collaborative research initiatives focused on social and economic transitions.
