Markku Oinonen serves as Director of Laboratory at the Finnish Museum of Natural History, University of Helsinki, and holds an Adjunct Professorship at the University of Turku. His expertise spans radiocarbon measurements, luminescence dating, and stable isotope analysis, driving multidisciplinary research in archaeology, environmental science, and climate change.
His research focuses on applying isotopic techniques to reconstruct historical environments, analyze cultural heritage materials, and trace anthropogenic impacts. Key interests include accelerator mass spectrometry for fossil fuel emissions tracking, tree-ring analysis of solar events like the Carrington Event, and multi-isotopic studies of medieval communities. His work bridges natural sciences with humanities through collaborations with archaeologists, climatologists, and historians.
Recent publications demonstrate methodological innovation across fields—from identifying cosmopolitan communities in medieval Finland using isotopic evidence to developing cosmic markers for exhaust gas analysis. His research consistently integrates multiple dating techniques to address complex questions in environmental forensics and cultural heritage preservation.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Alumni of the year 2009 award
Oinonen has supervised two students and leads significant projects including the Academy of Finland-funded WELT initiative (2023-2027) on high-latitude tree-ring climate records and the Suomen Kulttuurirahasto project on post-glacial ecosystem changes. His laboratory provides essential dating services supporting 24 active and completed research projects with total funding from national foundations and research councils.
He directs the Finnish Museum of Natural History's analytical laboratory, which maintains critical datasets like 14CARHU and δIANA while collaborating internationally on radiocarbon, luminescence, and stable isotope applications. The facility serves as a hub for interdisciplinary research connecting environmental scientists, archaeologists, and cultural heritage institutions across Europe.
