معرفی
Mark von Itzstein is a Distinguished Professor at Griffith University's Institute for Biomedicine and Glycomics, where he founded and directed the Institute for Glycomics (2000-2024). His research focuses on glycoscience and drug discovery, particularly in anti-infective therapeutics. He is an NHMRC Investigator since 2021 with current projects targeting influenza, parainfluenza, drug-resistant bacteria, and cancer.
His landmark achievement includes leading the team that developed the anti-influenza drug Relenza®, approved worldwide since 1999. Research spans:
- Carbohydrate-based drug discovery
- Antiviral therapeutic development
- Glycotherapeutic platforms
- Cancer glycobiology
Publications reveal strong emphasis on viral pathogenesis mechanisms (55%), glycoconjugate synthesis (20%), cancer glycobiology (15%), and analytical glycomics (10%). Recent work utilizes advanced structural biology and glycoanalytics to develop novel therapeutics.
Honors include:
- Fellow of Australian Academy of Science (2003)
- Fellow of Australian Academy of Health & Medical Sciences (2015)
- Officer of the Order of Australia (2019)
- Australia Prize for Health (1996)
He has supervised 51+ graduate students across doctoral and master's projects in virology, glycobiology, and diagnostics. Currently leads 12 doctoral candidates in projects including universal vaccines, nanobody diagnostics, and cancer glycomics.
Research infrastructure includes the ACRF International Centre for Cancer Glycomics and receives funding from NHMRC, industry partners, and philanthropic organizations totaling $10M+.
