Dr. Mark Sweezy is an Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), where he joined as a founding faculty member in 2010. He holds a B.S. in Biology from Western State College of Colorado and a Ph.D. in Microbiology & Molecular Genetics from the University of Vermont. His postdoctoral research at the University of Colorado, supported by the NSF, focused on microtubule motor proteins and chromosome segregation.
- Education:
- B.S., Biology, Western State College (Colorado)
- Ph.D., Microbiology & Molecular Genetics, University of Vermont
Dr. Sweezy’s research investigates genome instability and carcinogenesis, particularly the mechanism of novel cancer cell-killing compounds. His work integrates molecular genetics, biochemistry, and cell biology to understand cancer progression. He has secured funding from the NSF and the Maine Space Grant Consortium.
- Awards & Funding:
- NSF pre-doctoral fellowship (DNA repair research)
- NSF postdoctoral fellowship (chromosome segregation studies)
- Maine Space Grant Consortium funding
Dr. Sweezy also contributes to curriculum development in biochemistry and cell biology at USJ’s Pharmacy program. His research and teaching emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to biomedical challenges.
