Mark Sprevak is a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences (PPLS) at the University of Edinburgh. He serves as Programme Director for the MSc in Mind, Language and Embodied Cognition and has held past roles including Programme Director for Cognitive Science, Teaching Director for Philosophy, and Deputy Head of Subject Area at PPLS.
His research focuses on foundational questions in computational cognitive sciences, particularly the limitations of computational models in addressing semantic content, phenomenal consciousness, and central reasoning. He investigates the philosophical implications of these challenges, including connections to AI ethics and interdisciplinary collaborations with humanities.
Recent publications include contributions to The Cambridge Handbook of Computational Cognitive Sciences (2023), analyzing the scope and constraints of computational modeling in cognition. He has secured grants from the Carnegie Trust and AHRC for projects on distributed cognition and AI ethics.
