Nikolas Gisborne is a Professor of Linguistics and English Language at the University of Edinburgh's School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences. He holds a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship (2022–2025) for his project on relative clauses and language change. Previously, he was at the Universities of Cambridge and Hong Kong before joining Edinburgh in 2002. He has held administrative roles including Head of the Linguistics and English Language department (2017–2020) and established the PPLS Skills Centre in 2016.

His research focuses on theoretical linguistics, language change, syntax, semantics, and event structure. He co-edited books such as Defaults in Morphological Theory (OUP 2017) and Constructional Approaches to English Grammar (2008). Current research explores headed relative clauses in Indo-European languages and their typological implications.
