Mark Pietralunga is a Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at Florida State University, within the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds the Victor B. Oelschläger Professorship and has served as department chair (1993-2003 and 2013-2019). His research focuses on 20th century Italian literature, post-war narrative, Italian American studies, translation, and book publishing. Pietralunga has led Florida State's Florence study abroad program and coordinates the Italian Studies Program.
He earned a B.A. in English from UCLA and M.A./Ph.D. in Italian from UC Berkeley. His editorial roles include associate editor of Italica, membership in the MLA Honors and Awards Committee, and positions with the American Association of Teachers of Italian (AATI), American Association of Italian Studies (AAIS), and South Atlantic Modern Language Association (SAMLA). He has contributed to editorial boards of journals in both Italy and the U.S.
Pietralunga's teaching awards include two Outstanding Teaching Awards and a Teaching Incentive Award from FSU. His authored/edited works include biographies of Cesare Pavese, studies on Beppe Fenoglio's translation practices, and analyses of Italian literary correspondence. His courses explore Italian culture, literature's cross-cultural representation, and food's role in national identity.
His professional service includes chairing major academic committees and promoting Italian studies through publications and institutional leadership. The Victor B. Oelschläger Professorship honors a legacy of departmental growth and scholarly excellence in modern languages.
