Mark Lomax is an Associated Faculty member in Musicology at The Ohio State University. He specializes in African American musical traditions, socio-political and spiritual aspects of art music, and using the arts to build community. His notable work includes the 12-album cycle 400: An Afrikan Epic (2019), which explores the African diaspora's history and future. Lomax's ensemble performances and lectures address themes of resilience, identity, and healing. He has received support from the Wexner Center for the Arts and the Johnstone Fund for New Music. His projects include the 400 Curriculum, a 90-page guide for educators, and collaborations with institutions like the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.
Research interests focus on music's role in socio-political contexts, Afro-futurism, and cultural preservation. His recent works such as Tapestry (2022) and Freedom Suite (2022) blend improvisation with historical narratives. Lomax actively engages in philanthropy and community outreach through his music and educational initiatives.
