Professor Mark Johnson is a Clinical Professor in Obstetrics at Imperial College London, based at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. He holds academic positions including Reader (2006–2010) and Senior Lecturer (1999–2006). His primary affiliations are with the Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction within the Faculty of Medicine. He also collaborates with the Section of Pregnancy, Parturition and Prematurity, the Centre for Paediatrics and Child Health, and the Vaccine Research Network.
Johnson’s qualifications include MBBS (1982), MRCP UK (1985), PhD (1995), and MRCOG (1996). His career transitioned from Endocrinology to Obstetrics in 1993, during which he established the successful IVF unit at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. His research focuses on preterm labour mechanisms, maternal heart disease in pregnancy, and progesterone signaling. He has supervised 10 higher-degree students and collaborates with prominent researchers like Professors Philip Bennett and Jolien Roos-Hesselink.
He serves on grant-review panels for MRC, Wellcome Trust, and BBSRC, and reviews for journals like Endocrinology and Human Reproduction. Current grants include investigations into Kv7 channel activators for preterm labour and maternal omega-3 supplementation. His work aims to improve preterm labour prevention and maternal cardiac management during pregnancy.
Johnson is affiliated with professional bodies including the Society for Endocrinology and British Maternal Fetal Medicine Society. His recent publications explore topics such as progesterone’s inflammatory suppression and outcomes in cardiac disease during pregnancy.
