Dr. Mark J Spede serves as Professor of Music, Director of Bands, Director of Tiger Band, and Conductor of the Symphonic Band at Clemson University’s College of Arts and Humanities. He oversees a comprehensive band program spanning symphonic, athletic, and jazz ensembles, while teaching courses such as aesthetics of music and science of music in the Honors College.
Awards and Leadership:
- Honorary Alumnus status (2023) and Clemson University Board of Trustees Awards for Faculty Excellence (2008, 2009, 2012)
- Dean’s Awards for Teaching (2009) and Service (2023)
- President of the College Band Directors National Association (2019–2023) and current President of the Southern Division
- Co-led the University of Colorado-Boulder/University of Maryland Aerosol Study, enabling safe return of music students during the pandemic
Professional Contributions:
- Founded the Clemson Faculty Jazz Quintet (2012) and performs as a drummer
- Conducted the Clemson Symphonic Band at the 2012 London Summer Olympics
- Published music arranger with works for high school and college bands through Peer Music, Schirmer, and Carl Fischer
- Former Assistant Director of Bands at the University of Florida and The University of Texas at Austin
