Professor Mark Howells is Joint Director of the Loughborough Centre for Sustainable Transitions: Energy, Environment and Resilience (STEER) and Professor of Systems Analysis for Sustainable Development. With over two decades of leadership in energy systems research, he directs interdisciplinary initiatives focused on sustainable energy transitions and climate resilience.
Howells' expertise spans energy policy formulation, integrated assessment modeling, and climate-compatible development strategies. As Editor-in-Chief of Energy Strategy Reviews, he shapes scholarly discourse on sustainable energy policy. His research informs international organizations including the IAEA, UNDP, and UNIDO, particularly in developing energy planning capacities globally.
Previous leadership roles include heading the Energy Systems Analysis division at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and serving as Energy Planner for the International Atomic Energy Agency. He maintains an honorary position at Imperial College London and serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Payne Institute.
