Professor Mark Hopkinson is a Professor in Electrical Engineering at the University of Sheffield's School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He holds a PhD from the University of Sheffield and a BSc from the University of Birmingham. His academic role includes serving as the School REF Lead.
His research focuses on semiconductor epitaxy, particularly III-V materials and nanostructuring, with applications in photonics and healthcare. He has over 500 publications, 200 conference presentations, and 30 invited talks. Notable projects include coordinating the EU Horizon 2020 'Nanostencil' project on laser interference lithography for semiconductor patterning.
Key research interests include quantum dots, nanowires, electronics-photonics integration, and ultrafast photonic devices. He has received the Pierre de Fermat Fellowship (France) and the Huang Kun Medal (Beijing Institute of Semiconductors).
Prof. Hopkinson's career spans roles at the University of Warwick, Marconi PLC, and the EPSRC National Centre for III-V Technologies. He has advised numerous students and contributed to major conference steering committees in his field.
