Mark Harris is the Andreas Idreos Chair in Science and Religion and Director of the Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion at the University of Oxford. He holds a position at Harris Manchester College and serves as President of the European Society for the Study of Science and Theology (ESSSAT). His academic journey bridges physics and theology, notable for co-discovering 'spin ice' in condensed matter physics and later transitioning to theological studies. He holds advanced degrees including a PhD from the University of Cambridge (1991) and two MAs from Ripon College Cuddesdon (2005) and St Catharine’s College, Cambridge (1992).
Research focuses on the theological implications of quantum physics, the 'theology of science' framework, and intersections between biblical scholarship and natural sciences. Key projects include leadership of the 'Theology of the Quantum World' initiative and the God and the Book of Nature research network, funded by the Issachar Fund and John Templeton Foundation. His work also explores ecotheology, miracle theology, and the unity/disunity of scientific disciplines.
Awarded Fellow status with the International Society for Science and Religion (ISSR), Harris contributes to editorial roles including co-editing Routledge's Science and Religion monograph series. His advisory roles include the Science and Religion Forum and the Center for the Study of Science and Religion in Zagreb. Current research emphasizes critical analysis of quantum mechanics' theological reception and the ethical dimensions of scientific inquiry.
