Professor Mark Fleishman is a T.B.L. Webster Fellow at the Institute of Classical Studies (affiliated with the University of London) and holds a home institution position at the University of Cape Town. His research focuses on reimagining tragedy from African and Global South perspectives, addressing postcolonial challenges and futures through theatre and performance.
Research Interests: Fleishman leads the Reimagining Tragedy from Africa and the Global South (ReTAGS) project, examining tragedy through three prisms: archival postcolonial tragedies, transgressive protest behaviors, and artistic reimaginings. Notable productions include Medea (1994), In the City of Paradise (1998/2015), Antigone (not quite/quiet) (2019), and Oedipus at Colonus: #after sophocles (2023). He is currently finalizing a monograph with Oxford University Press analyzing postcolonial tragedy in South Africa.
Artistic Contributions: Fleishman’s work bridges classical texts with contemporary socio-political contexts. The ReTAGS project developed a digital archive documenting creative processes, linking rehearsal-room ideas to final performances. This archive enables analysis of how theoretical concepts manifest in live theatre.
Awards & Grants: No specific awards or grants listed in available texts. The ReTAGS project appears to be the primary research initiative.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with artists and researchers via the ReTAGS project, emphasizing interdisciplinary artistic research. The digital archive platform serves as a collaborative tool for documenting creative processes.
