Luis Alfaro

Luis Alfaro is an Associate Professor of Dramatic Writing and Director of the MFA Dramatic Writing Program at the University of Southern California’s School of Dramatic Arts. He holds tenure and is a distinguished figure in theatre with a ‘genius grant’ from the MacArthur Foundation. His work merges classical Greek tragedies with contemporary social issues, notably exploring immigration, race, and urban life. Alfaro has served as playwright-in-residence at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (2013–2019), the Victory Gardens Theatre (2013–2020), and the Mark Taper Forum (1995–2005). He also leads the L.A. Writers’ Workshop as Associate Artistic Director at Center Theatre Group.

Alfaro’s research focuses on reimagining ancient myths through modern Chicano/Latinx experiences. His plays like Oedipus El Rey (set in South Central LA) and Mojada (framing Medea as an immigrant woman) exemplify this approach. His creative process involves community engagement, including story circles in crisis zones across the U.S.

Award highlights include the Ford Foundation’s Art of Change Fellowship and multiple Kennedy Center recognitions. His artistic output spans theatre, film (Chicanismo, an Emmy-nominated short), and spoken-word recordings. Alfaro emphasizes ‘citizen artistry’ in teaching, urging students to connect their work to societal issues.
