Dr. Leo Kershaw is an Instructor in Ancient Greek and Latin at the University of Oxford's Faculty of Classics. He holds a BA (2020) from Lady Margaret Hall, MSt (2021) from Balliol College, and a DPhil (2024) from Balliol, funded by AHRC, Clarendon Fund, and Balliol College. His doctoral research examined the reception of Euripides' Medea in South African contexts (19th–21st century). He teaches Greek and Latin language at all levels through the Faculty’s Language Teaching Team and contributes to Classical Reception Studies via the APGRD.
Research interests focus on global reception of Greek tragedy, particularly in the Global South, exploring decolonial adaptations and subversive reinterpretations of classical material. Key themes include anti-colonialism in performance, gender fluidity in ancient texts, and ethical considerations in classical pedagogy.
Recent publications analyze Hercules mythology beyond Western canons, collaborative performance processes of Oedipus adaptations, and neo-colonial critiques in academic frameworks. Upcoming works address radical performativity in Third World Bunfight’s MedEia and queer readings of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Active in interdisciplinary projects on archiving ancient performance traditions and decolonizing classical scholarship.
