Mark Eiteman is a Professor and Interim Chair at the School of Chemical, Materials, and Biomedical Engineering, University of Georgia. He specializes in metabolic engineering, bioprocess engineering, and fermentation technology. His teaching includes courses on Mass Transfer, Biochemical Engineering, and Bioseparations. He has collaborated internationally, including at Anna University and IIT-Madras in India. Dr. Eiteman received the UGA Inventor of the Year Award (2014) for his contributions to microbial production systems.
His research focuses on optimizing microbial pathways for the production of biochemicals like pyruvate, citramalate, and esters. He explores strategies to enhance strain tolerance, improve nutrient utilization, and mitigate inhibitory compounds in lignocellulosic hydrolysates. His work integrates metabolic modeling, enzyme engineering, and bioreactor design to advance industrial biotechnology applications.
Key research trends in his articles include metabolic pathway engineering for high-value chemical synthesis (e.g., mevalonate, 3-hydroxybutyrate), strain optimization for stress tolerance, and process design for sustainable bioconversion of biomass. His contributions bridge fundamental microbial biology with scalable industrial processes.
