Dr. Mark Del Borgo is a Senior Lecturer and Lab Head of the Macro Therapeutics Lab in the Department of Pharmacology at Monash University's Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. He specializes in peptide science, particularly in pharmacological characterization of peptides and their applications in regenerative medicine, bioengineering, and drug delivery.
Education: PhD in Pharmacology (University of Melbourne, 2005); BSc(Hons) in Pharmacology (University of Melbourne, 2000). Career highlights include postdoctoral roles at the University of Queensland (2005–2007) and University of Kansas (2007–2008), followed by a research fellowship at Monash University (2009–present). He pioneered β-amino acid-derived peptide self-assembly into fibrous materials, published in Angew. Chem. Int. Ed..
Research focuses on peptide materials, bioengineering, and drug delivery, with contributions to anti-fibrotic agents, hydrogel technologies, and angiotensin receptor modulation. Key projects include injectable hydrogels for diabetic organ protection and SARS-CoV-2 inhibitors targeting ACE2 receptors. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and innovation.
Grants and collaborations include projects on diabetic kidney damage, anti-fibrotic peptide mimics, and cardiac fibrosis treatment. He heads a lab advancing β-peptide-based platforms for therapeutic applications and leads multidisciplinary teams in drug development and biomaterials research.
