Mark Coulthard

Dr. Mark Coulthard is an Affiliate of the School of Biomedical Sciences within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences at The University of Queensland. He maintains a dual focus on clinical practice as a physician and academic research, with particular expertise in pediatric critical care and vascular biology.

Dr. Coulthard holds a Doctor of Philosophy of Medicine (Research) from The University of Queensland and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. His clinical training and board certification provide the foundation for his research in pediatric critical care medicine.

His primary research interests focus on the Role of Eph/ephrin receptor ligand system in vascular leak in sepsis/systemic inflammatory response syndrome, exploring how this signaling pathway contributes to vascular permeability during critical illness. Another major research theme involves the Role of telemedicine in the management of critically ill children, where he has led the Queensland telepaediatric service for over 15 years. Additionally, he has developed the Paediatric Online Interactive Education (POLIE) platform to enhance medical education.

Analysis of Dr. Coulthard's recent publications reveals a strong focus on sepsis research, pediatric pharmacokinetics, and telemedicine applications. His work on Eph/ephrin signaling has evolved from basic science to translational applications targeting vascular leak in sepsis. The pharmacokinetics research demonstrates his commitment to optimizing antibiotic dosing in critically ill children, while his telemedicine studies reflect a sustained effort to improve access to pediatric critical care expertise across Queensland.

Dr. Coulthard has secured significant research funding from multiple sources including The Children's Hospital Foundation, NHMRC, Financial Markets Foundation for Children, and Bayer Pharma AG. His current projects focus on 'Eph receptor blockade to prevent and repair endothelial damage in systemic inflammation' and related therapeutic approaches for sepsis.

Regarding supervision, Dr. Coulthard is actively involved in mentoring the next generation of researchers. He currently serves as an Associate Advisor for a PhD student investigating 'How to use antibiotics better in Paediatric Intensive Care using pharmacokinetic principles,' working alongside Professor Jeffrey Lipman and other senior researchers.
