Mark Cortnage is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Allied Health and Social Care at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), part of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Social Care. His expertise focuses on public health, nutrition, and weight loss strategies aimed at improving healthspan and longevity, particularly for adults over 40. He has developed lifestyle interventions like 'Shift the Timber' and 'The Alpha Programme', leveraging football to enhance engagement in health behaviors.
With over 25 years of experience in exercise, nutrition, and behavioral strategies, Mark's research emphasizes preventive health measures, sustainable habits, and reducing disease risk linked to aging. He co-led a 2024 talk at the Cambridge Science Festival titled 'Can we live to 100?' and is developing further talks and articles on healthspan.
As an educator, Mark is Course Leader for the BSc (Hons) Public Health program and has taught modules ranging from Level 4 to Level 7, including Professional Skills for Public Health, Population Health, and Health Communication. He has also contributed to curricula across disciplines like Nursing and Midwifery. His qualifications include a PhD in nutrition and exercise optimization from ARU and an MSc in International Public Health Nutrition.
Mark is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and sits on the UKPHR Practitioner registration Task and Finish group. He has received a £6,000 grant for Health, Wellbeing and Performance research. His work has been featured in The Times (2022) discussing midlife weight loss strategies.
